Three cards. Three places. Three moments that stayed.

These paintings began as moments that caught my eye and asked me to pause a little longer.

A shadow on the ground after the AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk. Golden light at Kennedy Theatre. Rainbows stretching over the road I drove to teach again and again.

Small pauses. Mental images. Moments I wanted to hold onto.

Look Up — After the Walk

We had just left the AFSP Out of the Darkness Walk. It was Michael’s 40th birthday. I was photographing light and shadows on the concrete while my daughter walked ahead of me. Then she turned around and called back:

look up.

I followed the light through the canopy and took the photograph that became this painting.

Kennedy Theatre at 5pm — UH Mānoa

I stopped in the middle of the walkway because the light caught me first.

The trees, the gold reflected against the building, the clouds gathering above Mānoa valley— everything felt suspended for a second.

I was a PhD student at UH Mānoa when everything changed. This painting holds that specific 5pm light — the kind that makes you stop and notice something you’ve passed a hundred times before.

Rainbows Over Familiar Roads

This was the drive I made to teach, again and again, during the season I was writing.

The rainbows stretched across those familiar roads so often they started to feel like part of the landscape. They were always there if I remembered to look up.
