It was Michael’s 40th birthday. I was photographing light and shadows on the concrete while my daughter walked ahead of me. Then she turned around and called back:\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003elook up.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI followed the light through the canopy and took the photograph that became this painting.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eKennedy Theatre at 5pm — UH Mānoa\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI stopped in the middle of the walkway because the light caught me first.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe trees, the gold reflected against the building, the clouds gathering above Mānoa valley— everything felt suspended for a second.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eI was a PhD student at UH Mānoa when everything changed.
